How to export your references in other reference manager formats

If you need to share your references with someone who is not a Papers user, you can do so using the export function in Papers. You can export selected papers, a selected collection or the entire library as Endnote XML, RefMan RIS or BibTeX file formats that can imported to the relevant programs.

Export Endnote XML

  • Select papers or a collection you want to export.
  • Select Export Endnote XML Library export option.
  • Specify whether you want to export selected papers, a selected collection or the entire library.
  • Click Browse to determine the export file location.
  • You can also specify whether the journal names are exported in full or abbreviated format and whether the export format is Endnote version 7 or Endnote version 8 or higher.
  • Click Export and the the file with .xml extension appears in your specified location

Export Refman RIS

  • Select papers or a collection you want to export.
  • Select Export Refman RIS file export option.
  • Specify whether you want to export selected papers, a selected collection or the entire library.
  • Click Browse to determine the export file location.
  • Click Export and the the file with .ris extension appears in your specified location.

Export BibTeX

  • Select papers or a collection you want to export.
  • Select Export BibTeX Library export option.
  • Specify whether you want to export selected papers, a selected collection or the entire library.
  • Click Browse to determine the export file location.
  • You can also specify whether the journal names are exported in full or abbreviated format and whether the BibTeX export format is minimal, standard or complete.
  • Click Export and the the file with .bib extension appears in your specified location.
