Papers for Mac Roadmap

New and upcoming
Many of our users have asked us to give them more insights into what they can expect in the next updates of Papers for Mac. On this page we'll give you a glimpse into our kitchen and let you know what we're cooking. We'll do our best to regularly update the page so check back frequently if you want to know what's coming...
Missing features from Papers1
We rebuilt Papers completely from scratch in order to give it the foundation on top of which we can build features like the ones listed below. This did mean however that every Papers1 feature had to be rewritten. It also meant that unfortunately not all of them made it yet into Papers2. Most have now returned in Papers2, the remaining ones are first on our list. We hope to bring the missing features back within the next updates, this includes:
Journal merging - NEW in Papers 2.2
Because of a dramatically different engine, author and journal merging didn't make the Papers2 deadline. Author merging returned in Papers 2.1, bundle merging is next.
Auto-complete - NEW in Papers 2.2
Another area that got a complete overhaul is the authors and journal editing in the inspector. As a result auto-complete didn't make it yet, it's another one that still requires the UI to be added. Almost done.
Finder spotlight integration
Papers, authors and journals in Papers1 would also show up in the Finder spotlight results. This functionality is lacking in Papers 2.0 but will return soon.
Import and Export of Papers Archives
We're working on an improved format of Papers archives, that for example can store collection information. The new format didn't make it yet in the 2.0, we hope to ship it in an update soon. Update: import of archives created in Papers1 is again possible in Papers 2.1
Search for recent papers for authors and journals - NEW in Papers 2.2
Papers1 had a nice feature where clicking a journal or author would show recent articles. We hope to bring this back in a slightly different and more powerful form, but need a bit more time. Stay tuned.
New features we've started working on
Multi-editing - NEW in Papers 2.2
Another top request is the ability to edit the metadata of multiple documents at the same time. This didn't make the 2.0 either but we're working on it as we speak
Planned features down the road
Some of the features we're planning to add in the nearer future are:
- Support for footnote type citations - NEW in Papers 2.2
- Support for RSS feeds
- And much more...
My feature is not on the list
We'd love to hear your ideas and how you think we can make Papers even better. If your favorite feature is not already on the list, you can send us your thoughts here. Note that we will always read each and every response we get, but cannot always answer all emails since we'd like to deliver you as many items on the lists above as possible, as quick as we can.
Is that all?
Definitely not, there's a lot more on our list. For a variety of reasons we cannot tell you all the features we're working on. For example, for some it is hard to estimate how long it will take us or whether some ideas are feasible at all. Other features we rather keep as a surprise, also towards our competitors. One thing is for sure there's a lot of new features coming now the foundation of Papers2 is in place.
Stay tuned!
