Another great feature of Papers for iPad is the ability to highlight your research and make notes. This tutorial will walk you through how this is done.

1. Highlighting your papers

  • First, tap the beginning of the area you would like to highlight and hold your finger there for just under a second until the loupe (the little magnifying glass) appears.

  • Keep holding your finger on the screen and drag it to the end of the area you want to highlight. Don't worry if this doesn't select everything you want to highlight, you can always adjust the start and end of the highlighted area by moving the blue markers. Once you're happy with what you want to highlight, tap 'highlight'.

If you would like to change the highlighter colour, tap something already highlighted then select 'colour' and choose from the selection.

2. Making notes about a paper

If you would like to make notes about a particular paper overall, tap the 'Note' icon in the sidebar. If you can't see the sidebar just tap the middle of the screen for it to appear. Now you can use the iPad's keyboard to write notes.

3. Making notes in specific sections of your papers

  • If you would like to make a note on a specific section of a paper highlight the section as explained in the 'Highlighting your papers' section above. Once you've done this, tap 'Note'. Now, using the keyboard, you can make a note about the area of the paper you selected. Once satisfied with the note just tap the paper in the background to close the note.
