Inspector - Supplements
The inspector window gives you a lot of information about files you have imported to Papers. One of the new ways to use the inspector pane is adding supplements to your papers. We'll discuss adding supplemental material to your papers in detail in this tutorial.
We will use an example to illustrate how you can use supplements:
Let's say we attended a talk at a conference, and imported the slides available into Papers. The presentation is added to your library like any other file, and you can edit the meta data for the file in the inspector window.
At the top right side of the inspector window you can also
select the tab "supplements":

Once you've clicked on the supplements tab, there are different options available to enhance your file from the inspector window. The basic purpose here is for you to add supplemental files to a main document. There are some obvious uses for this, for example when supplemental files are published for a research article. However, there are many more different ways you can use the supplemental file section. This is the reason we are using a presentation as an example, and not a journal article that has supplemental files available.
Supplements work in the same way as any other document you import into Papers with regards to location of your file. Depending on your preferences, Papers either copies the entire file into your library, or it creates a link to the file's original location.
Editing title and subtitle
The document you are adding supplements to has a title and perhaps a subtitle. Both can be edited: simply double click on the section you want to edit and a text box with the title or subtitle appears.

In this case, I am going to add a subtitle that will further describe the document for my own reference:

Once you added or edited a title or subtitle, just hit enter to save it.
Adding supplemental files
To add supplemental files to your document, you can choose from a few different ways to do this.
- Click on the + button to search for a file you would like to attach.

- Drag and drop a file into the marked area:

As you are dragging your files into Papers, you will see the marked area highlighted.

Once your supplements are successfully imported, you can see them listed in the inspector window:

Deleting supplements
Anything added to your supplements can easily be deleted. There are several different ways to delete files:
- Click on the delete key on your keyboard after selecting the file to delete.
- Click on the
button after selecting the file:
In this example the document "To do" was accidentally added to
the list of supplements. To delete it, I first selected the file,
then use the
to remove it.

Viewing and opening your supplements
Supplements are in your library for a reason. After all, keeping them organized with the documents they correspond to make them easy to find, and to read. There are two options to view your files:
- Quicklook: Hit the space bar on your keyboard, or the "quicklook" button in the supplements window, to get a preview window with the selected file.

-
Open: Open (and edit) the file by clicking on the "open" button next to "quicklook".
-
Show in finder: By right clicking on the file, you can select "Show in finder" along with the Quicklook and Open file options. Show in finder will open a separate finder window showing the location of the file within your library folder or hard drive.
