How to create smart collections in Papers2

Papers2 makes it easy for you to create smart collections of your documents. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a smart collection by creating one based on some of the different parameters you can use. In this example we will create a smart collection for papers published by Nature, only containing these keywords: "behavior" and "neuroscience".

Let's get started:

  • At the bottom left corner of the Papers2 screen, you will see a "+" icon, click on it.

  • A window pops up showing "Smart Collection" in the list:

  • Select "Smart Collection" by clicking on it.

  • A new window pops up with "New collection" in the editing collection name field.

  • Change the name of your collection.

  • First I will change my smart collection's name to "Nature - Behavior Neuroscience"

  • Then I use a parameter that selects only papers published in a Nature journal. For this, I selected paper + publisher + contains "Nature":

  • By clicking on the "+" next to my parameter, I can add another field. Doing this twice, I can satisfy my two keyword parameters:

  • Note that you need to indicate whether you want your papers to satisfy all or any of the parameters you listed to be included in the collection.

  • Now, you can decide if you want your collection to be restricted to a fixed number of papers. For example, you can limit your collection to the most/least recently published, most/least recently imported, most/least recently read or by the rating of your papers.

  • Click OK and you've set up your smart collection in papers2! You will see your smart collection in the bottom left window in papers2.

NB: Note how a manual collection has a different file icon. You can easily recognize which collections are smart collections and which are manual by the file icon.

Creating a collection within another collection

If you would like to create collections within collections, the process is the same:
* Start by selecting your parent collection, and click on the "+" icon.

  • Select the type of collection you would like to create and name your collection.

  • You have now created a collection nested in another collection.

  • You can also drag your nested collection into your main collections folder:

Now your it is an independent collection and no longer nested under the parent collection you previously selected:

Similarly, you can drag any collection into another collections folder:
