Naming of Supplemental Files

Supplemental files should have a different naming system - the current system results in every file being given the same name with just a number after it.

Agreed. Some publications have many supplemental files, so the ability to change the name (not necessary the underlying file name, just the display name) would help greatly for me to identify which Supp File I should be looking at the next time I read the paper.

Also, some authors (who're presumably working off a Mac) upload Supp Files that do not have an extension. While I can still open the file by a double click, Preview/QuickLook does not work on files with no extensions. I would want to add the appropriate extensions to these files. Currently, Papers ask me via a dialog box if I want to save the XLS file as a Supp File. Perhaps in this dialog box, if there were no extension detected, it would ask me if I want to add an extension. My current workflow is now to save the Supp File in a separate directory, rename it, delete the original from Papers, then re-add it back.

You can already edit the name of the supplemental files the same way as you can change the name of a collection in the sourcelist. Simply click twice in a row on the name (not too quick) and type a different name...

Is there any easy way to add a file extension to supplemental files? Some journals provide files with no extensions. They open fine, but preview does not work in these cases. The rename method mentioned above changes the display name but not the underlying file name.

@Fong: this isn't possible yet but we'll do our best to make this possible.
