Creating Citation Styles

Papers 2 does not include the citation format for certain Journals. Is there a way of creating citation styles or importing the citation styles?

Edit from Mekentosj with more details below:

All the styles available with Papers are listed in the style browser that you can access as follows:

  • Go into the Papers Preferences...Manuscripts
  • Click on the popup menu 'Favorite Styles' and select 'More Styles...'
  • This will open the Style Browser

Note that many journals actually point in their instructions to authors to some generic standard styles like 'Vancouver', 'APA' or 'Chicago' to be used for their publications. That's often a good way to get the style you want.

Now, if you find a style that's close to what you need, but not quite there, we'd be very happy to apply the necessary tweaks and make it work for you. In this case, please show us an example of the wrong format and what you would expect it to be (both the in-text cite and the bibliography entries). In such case, please be sure to also give us a link to the instruction to authors so I can add this link to the style as well for reference.

If you are curious, we made it possible to overwrite the styles present in Papers2, or to add more styles, by dragging CSL files into Papers, or adding them to the 'Styles' subfolder that you will find in your Papers2 library folder. This however requires you to edit the XML files that are used by CSL, and to read the CSL specifications. It's not for the feint of heart, but if you are comfortable with XML and have a good text editor like TextMate or similar, then it's not out of reach. The advantage of CSL is that it is used by other applications, it has been developed in the open by many others before Papers adopted it, and there is a lot of material online about it.

Here is more info on our Knowledge Base:

Here is the CSL reference:

And here are the main repositories for CSL stylesheets:

Finally, if you create a new style and submit it to the CSL repository, you can claim a free Papers2 serial: http://support.mekentosj.com/kb/read-write-cite/a-serial-for-a-style

    Dear Charles
Many thanks, this is very helpful.
I don't know what the cal repository is and don't want to have to spend time learning how to use it; can you send me or circulate a recipe for downloading styles from here into Papers?

    Hi Jason,

Sorry for the confusion about the repository. This is here:

    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles

You can select the style you like on this page (it can be inside 'dependent' for some of them). Once you have the page for that style, then click on 'raw' and use the menu File > Save to save to your disk. Make sure it is named with the 'cvs' extension. Finally, you can drag that file into Papers to add it to your library of styles.

I realize this is a bit convoluted and we hope to make that better in the future, with a better mechanism to update the styles.

    Hi Charles
All clear, thanks. Does it matter in which way the journal name or wither names are input into the Papers filing for this formatting to work? For some entries in my library, which cannot be matched by Papers, I do this manually and am never entirely sure how to enter these. Presumably, Papers use be able to recognise a full journal name or author input and be able to then format this as a specifically formatted citation output. Hope this makes sense.

Authors and journal are treated as their own separate entries, that you can also populate some more if you need, by going into the SOURCES > Periodicals / Authors.

For the journal, you should enter the full name in the paper, and go into Periodicals to set the correct abbreviation if necessary.

For authors, we parse what you enter. It works also with multiple names, e.g. if you simply paste it from the PDF itself, it will be fine in most cases. Again, you can go into the SOURCES > Authors if necessary as well.

Not also that when Papers autocomplete a name, it indicates the journal or author is already there.

How do you get to: SOURCES>Periodicals/Authors?
This is all i have under Sources.

Jason: sorry for the confusion, that's in the source list, in the left panel, where there are the entries for your Library, Manuscripts, 'My Papers', etc... One of the subheading is 'SOURCES', under which you have Periodicals, Authors and Websites.

Instead of 'web archive', don't you have the 'Page Source' option? (see screenshot).

Yes, but it is csl, not csv. You can also just drag the file in Papers library icon in th source list.

This comment was split into a new private discussion: Style for "Journal of Dairy Science"

    Hi,

I'm having trouble finding the correct sitation style for the Journal of Dairy Science. I can find one when I go from preferences - manuscripts - favorite styles - more styles named "Journal of Dairy Science" on the field of biology, but it doesn't match with the quidelines of the paper. The guidelines can be found here: http://www.journalofdairyscience.org/webfiles/images/journals/jods/...

The main problems I have are that the style named "Journal of Dairy Science" for papers doesn't add volume or page numbers to the reference list fo other references except journal articles (for example not for books) and that at least the references for thesis works don't have the publishers city/country neither the page numbers in the reference list.

    hi,

Can you correct your entry for Cancer Research? The journal wants:

Yan L-X, Huang X-F, Shao Q, Huang MY, Deng L, Wu QL, et al. MicroRNA miR-21 overexpression in human breast cancer is associated with advanced clinical stage, lymph node metastasis and patient poor prognosis. RNA 2008;14:2348–60.

    but I get

Yan L-X, Huang X-F, Shao Q, Huang M-Y, Deng L, Wu Q-L, et al. MicroRNA miR-21 overexpression in human breast cancer is associated with advanced clinical stage, lymph node metastasis and patient poor prognosis. RNA. 2008 Nov;14(11):2348–60.

(so just omit the date and issue number) I'd be happy to do it but am daunted by the .csl file.

    thanks

@scidoc: Please find attached a zipped file for the style (you can also see it here: http://support.mekentosj.com/discussions/questions/13790-creating-c...). You should unzip the file, and then add the CSL style to your Papers2 library by dragging it into the Papers2 window. If you had already dragged it before, Papers2 will complain it's already there and will tell you where to find the style in your library. This will help you locate it on disk and remove it. Then you can drag the updated CSL file again.

(Note: Starting with OS 10.7 Lion and later, to access your Library folder, you need to use the Go menu in the Finder and press the option key. This will add a 'Library' item to the list, and will give you access to the hidden folder.)

Here is more info as well about this process:

Hello: I'm having difficulty formatting for the Journal of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. They follow Council of Science Editors except they want each reference numbered in a strict letter-by-letter format, rather than by appearance in the paper. Is there a way I can accomplish this? Thanks.

Hello! I am having problems with the style for the journal "Strahlentherapie und Onkologie" which is basically the NEJM style but with a different sorting pattern. References in this journal sorted alphabetically. Is there a possibility to just change the sorting?

Make sure to download the file with a ".csl" extension from there. Note that this style will ship with the next beta that should come out this week (see also: http://support.mekentosj.com/kb/how-to/how-to-sign-up-for-beta-vers...).

As a convenience, please find attached a zipped file for the style (you can also see it here: http://support.mekentosj.com/discussions/questions/13790-creating-c...).
