Syncing between computers
I currently use another product to do much of what Papers seems to do. I am interested in switching, but I can't tell if papers will sync between computers (my desktop and my laptop). This is crucial for me in the way I work. When I look for syncing info, all I can see is syncing to mobile devices, but not computers. Does Papers 2 support this feature in some way?

Been syncing my library between Mac's through DropBox for years and never had any issue. Setup: macpro at the office (always on) + imac at home + macbook pro on the move. Just a matter of making sure that 1. only one instance of Papers is running at any given time and 2. DropBox is finished syncing when launching Papers on another machine. No biggy as far as I'm concerned and I can't really see what the fuss is all about. Out of shear curiosity, has anyone been toying with a similar setup with Skydrive (or GoogleDrive)? The larger online storage makes it appealing to some, although DropBox remains my preferred online storage solution.

I, too, would be very interested in hearing if anyone has tried sync'ing their Papers2 library with GoogleDrive. I only have a free Dropbox account which I use as a real-time backup for my active Scrivener project, which takes up the whole 2GB. My Papers library is on the higher side of 10GB and I want to sync between my MBP and my PC desktop.
*Kudos to Mekentosj for accommodating cross-platform installs on a single user license unlike Scrivener, unfortunately.

I have tried to use Google Drive in this way on my macbook and Imac. It does not seem to work. You can use it for one copy but when you open it on another machine you either get a 'in use by other machine' warning or it opens without the latest updates / additions you added.

After trying to sync my imac desktop copy of Papers to my iPad Papers numerous times I'm convinced it doesn't work. Why is it still advertised as viable? I have the most recent versions for both devices.

After the newest update (2.2), I have been able to get complete syncing to work flawlessly (highlights, PDF's, notes, etc, all sync now with dropbox). For all of you having issues, I would consider updating.

Using MacBookPro and a iPad.
1. Bi-directional syncing does not work at all. Deleted (on MBP) papers keep reappearing after syncing!
2. Please explain what the option "remove papers not marked for syncing from the mobile device" means ("not marked", do i have to mark somthing or do i have mark al the others????)
3. Please improve "help/guide/insrtuction"

I have papers running independently on both work and home computers. I may try the dropbox method.
But before trying that, I need to merge or syc the libraries on the two machines; they originaly had the same papers, but I've added independently to each. I plan to copy one to a portable drive and import to the other.
Can I import a papers library without getting duplicates?

@merging libraries
Yes, if you have an iOS device. Just do a bidirectional sync from one machine to the iOS device, and to the second machine. You'll only get files though, no metadata or collections unfortunately. Hopefully export to Papers archive will arrive in 2.3, as I'm also waiting for something similar.

today I moved my papers2 library to Goggle Drive and synchronized with both my Air and Mini. It works perfectly!

I use Dropbox sync with Papers. One issue that can cause syncing problems is keeping items in the Trash. I suggest emptying Trash completely before all syncing.
I also sync with Paper for iPad; I have found significant issues if i try to sync with BOTH my iMac and MBPro versions of Papers. Select one for syncing and not the other is current solution!

I add myself to the long list of people who wish want sync capabilities between multiple mac computers via dropbox or Sugarsync. This is a much needed feature ! It is disappointing to see that it has not been implemented yet despite the numerous requests. Come on Mekentos!

Would love to see a solution that does not involve a third party product (i.e. Dropbox). I don't like the idea of paying a monthly fee to some outside service just to make Papers work the way it should natively. I also don't want to use up my entire Dropbox account for my Papers library.
284 Posted by Charles Jonassaint on 05 Jul, 2012 08:38 PM
I've been syncing with Dropbox. No problems except that some of my most recent additions will not show up when I switch computers.
I'm amazed regarding the complaints about Papers syncing natively without the help of a third-party software. 1) Dropbox, Microsoft, Google and Mac have all had a difficult time making cloud computing work, its not as simple as it looks. 2) Papers is a fraction of the cost of what you would expect for a program like this. I'm sure Mekentos would happily accpt donations to improve or speed up their software development and testing.

I believe Mendeley provides syncing capabilities across multiple computers and it is free (at least the first 1GB of storage). Maybe that's a business model Papers should look into?
286 Posted by Roy on 10 Jul, 2012 01:23 PM
I too would like to emphasize the importance of being able to sync across Macs. I currently use Unison to sync the whole filesystems but it takes some care. I have to make sure that I sync via Unison before adding PDFs to Papers and sync again after I have added them. Sometimes I trigger the another computer has Papers open message.
I use Dropbox for some things but I believe that they scan across users' files and replace duplicates by a link. It's the privacy issue that concerns me but it also sounds like that could be tricky to get right when two users annotate the same PDF. I am willing to pay for online storage though (eg. CloudSafe) if that is a necessary part of the business model.
Cheers, Roy

I've been waiting for support for syncing between computers in Papers since 2008. The not-officially-supported Dropbox solution worked for a time, but then the new "Magic Manuscripts" feature threw me for a loop by keeping my Papers library open even after I quit Papers itself. Now I have a multitude of "conflicted copy" papersdb files in my Dropbox and no way to reconcile them.
mekentosj, if you are unable to support syncing between computers in the near future, could you at least add a "repair library" function?
288 Posted by Antonio Pedro on 31 Jul, 2012 02:10 AM
Would actually be nice to tell us when the sync feature is expected to be supported rather than using vague expression such as "near future" since 2007. I am also willing to pay for storage.

I sync between two Macs by using ChronoSync software. It handles the Papers library as well as everything else I want synced. Make sure Papers is OFF on both machines before running the sync. I'd like to eventually sync with an iPad, too, but the ChronoSync method won't work for that.

At least they now have syncing on the roadmap, stating that they are working on it - So, really nice!
(And now wondering why it says export of Papers Archive is comming soon in v2.3)
291 Posted by Antonio Pedro on 02 Aug, 2012 08:30 PM
They are claiming to have it in their roadmap since 2007. Thus not so nice.

Sorry to use this specific discussion, I am a new member and I am trying to post my questions as new discussions, but every single one I posted is locked as private and no reply has been sent to me. Does anyone know how I can make my posts open to the members of this community? I have a fully paid account and I am registered, but I am asked each time to verify mu human status as if I didn't have an account, I am not sure what account is required as I thought I went through all log-in processes.
Thanks a lot, Marta

I have been using SugarSync to sync my papers library between home and work computers. However, as my library has grown to nearly 1,000 papers so has the size of the database file to 20 Mb. Although I may add one additional paper to my library, or make a small annotation, the entire database file is changed and all 20 Mb needs to be uploaded, which can take some time. It would be nice if there was a way to upload only the part of the database file that has been modified. Thanks!

I recently got Papers2 to use with Dropbox between a new iMac at work and my Macbook at home. The initial setup worked--my papers library appeared on my work computer. Now, however, my work computer's library is syncing nicely with Dropbox (all new papers from that computer are visible on my online Dropbox account), and those papers are added to my laptop's Dropbox folder. For some reason the communication breaks down between the Dropbox Papers folder on my laptop and the actual Papers library within the application. The new papers are in the Dropbox folders of both computers, but my laptop's Papers library doesn't show them.

Hi again, for some reason the above post looks wonky so I'm posting it again.
I've been trying to remember to exit Papers and Manuscripts on one computer before using them on the other, and I've accidentally opened Papers on my laptop twice but it warned me that corruption could occur and gave me the option to not open, so I don't think that is the cause of my problems.
As a test I went through my Dropbox folder on my laptop and found a recent paper that wasn't showing up in Papers on my laptop and dragged that pdf to the opened Papers program. Now the paper is visible in the library, and strangely in the same dropbox folder there are two copies of that pdf. It's like a one-way street, where Dropbox receives files from to Papers2 but Papers (on my laptop at least) doesn't receive files from Dropbox. Obviously I'm not very computer literate, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Adrienne, I don't think the problem you are describing is linked to the use of Papers through 2 computers and Dropbox in between. For the past 8 months, I've had similar problem with sporadic disappearance of references from Papers library and their PDF still in the folder directory of Papers. I do daily backup and verify everyday that my last import correspond to the actual number of PDF. Complicated, but until Papers computer geek find the problem it's the easiest way I have found to remain sane!

Dear Mekentosj, I love your software and I am grateful for your work. However, syncing libraries {including notes, highlights and collections} between computers is an essential feature that a software like Papers SHOULD have! The central advertised aim of this program is to make our lives easier.. well, keep your promise! I really hope Mekentosj will consider the suggestions coming from so many users and make this a priority for a future release.

+1 for bidirectional syncing of libraries. It would be great if all members of a lab could dynamically access (comment and append) a single library that is stored on a server. I know that Lifve was meant for this purpose, but if it can't exchange pdfs (and notes) even on the same network this is pretty cumbersome.
@thierry: I experienced the same: a paper disappeared from the library although its pdf was stored in the papers folder. Pretty scary, I hope that was a single event and the papers team is trying to fix this!

I'm now testing the latest beta version with creating a Papers 2 Archive. For me this solves at least the one directional syncing which I'm using up to now.
Bi-directional syncing would be very nice.

It's a major shame that there is no bulit-in syncing between multiple computers, the way that Mendeley does it. I wish they could use the Google Drive/Dropbox APIs and somehow set it up to sync libraries across computers real-time - so that you can have multiple instances of Papers2 open, just like Mendeley.
Unfortunately, Papers2 will not work with my workflow until it is better integrated into the cloud, since I often have to use many different workstations. Oh well.
