When searching in Web of Science I am not able to access the PDF of any reference, it seems the "Full Text" and "Get it" buttons do not work to go to the publishers site to download the PDF. This worked excellent in Papers 1 and I've tried several different references.

I forgot to mention. If I just go to the journal website using an external
web-browser I can download the PDF without any difficulty. I just can't seem
to do it from within Papers 2.0.4 for some reason.............weird.

I have the same problem with Papers 2
Works well in Papers 1 and in external Browsers.

I really like working with Papers 2 but this is very annoying and makes it hard to decide if it's worth paying for the upgrade.

Hope you can fix this soon.

    Thanks!!

I am also having the 'can't click on links to pdfs problem'

I also had this problems with Papers 1.

I only have this problem (on both versions) when I use a VPN @ home. When i am using an ethernet connection @ school, everything is fine.

So I figured out my problem; this may also work for you guys. I had a reserved IP address on my router. By removing this restriction, Papers2 is capable of loading pdfs from websites.

Hope this works for you guys

I had exactly the same problem this morning while I was trying to download pdf files from arxiv (open access) sitting at home without any proxy settings. Then I read your replies and logged in with proxy settings and VPN and the download inside from papers 2 worked. This is strange, because in any browser outside papers 2 I can download the articles with or without being logged in with proxy settings and VPN.

i'm having a similar problem ... when i try to import a pdf from papers2 it imports, but when i try to open it, it asks me if i want to add as supplemental data or send it to the downloads folder. neither option works. i used to be able to import just fine ... this is a recent problem.

when i try to open it

Could you clarify how you imported the PDF, and how you try to open it?

i imported the pdf through the search function within papers (if i download them using safari and then import/match i have no problems). then a double-click on the paper. screenshots attached.

@alexis and all: it seems there is something fishy going on with Papers2 and PDF downloads in certain conditions, that we need to figure out. I don't have a good answer now, and thus I'd recommend for now to use an external browser as the workaround. Thanks for your patience...

Downloading pdfs was working pretty much all the time until yesterday. Now it crashes most of the time, either when importing the article info (not the pdf) or the pdf. It gets part way through, or even completes it, then crashes. This is the same whether at home or at work. I just installed the latest upgrade, but it hasn't fixed it (although I haven't restarted my computer, just the programme). This is really frustrating, as the whole point of papers for me is to avoid having to prat around downloading files into one place then copying them to another!

@Viki: please start a separate discussion by sending an email to feedback at mekentosj dot com, as this seems unrelated to the topic here and will likely need a few emails back and forth. In this email, please indicate if the console.app output any Papers related error messages? You will find Console.app inside your Applications folder under Utilities. You can filter out Papers-only messages using the search field. For older messages, you have to load them explicitly by clicking the "Earlier" button.

To help solve the issue, could you also please send us the crash reports you're seeing? You will find these in the following place on your computer, in your home folder:
    /Users/your_name/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

The crash reports will include the name of the application in the file name , look for the application name 'Papers2.app'.

(On OS 10.7 Lion, to access your Library folder, you need to use the Go menu in the Finder and press the option key. This will add a 'Library' item to the list, and will give you access to the hidden folder.)

I think I have the same problem as Alexis: searched, dbl clicked the paper, (clicked import or not doesn't matter), clicked Import PDF on web page and voilà: blank screen, no pdf. But I don't get that dialogue about Import as supplementary.
This problem occured with version 2.0.9.3 on a VPN.

Same thing here. Importing pdf's from within papers 2 hardly ever works. I have to 'open in safari' and than manually download and add the pdf.

I am getting an error message that says papers has no internet connection when I try to download a pdf I have found in the search option. Not all websites are getting the error just a few and it seems random. I have only started getting this problem since I upgraded to papers 2. I definately have an internet connection and when I search the paper and download it outside papers it works fine.

To those people who cannot download PDFs (no internet connection): Do you still get the problem if you quit and restart Papers2?

I'm asking because I had this problem for a while previously, and simply restarting Papers2 solved the problem. I also realized that I rarely ever quit Papers2 these days since the red button only hides the window, plus I rarely ever restart my MBP (sleep and instant wake rules!).

Hi, quitting and restarting and upgrading to the newest version am now getting a crashed screen the same as marina above, it starts to download and then ... nothing happens ... driving me nuts .... maybe I should go back to papers 1 but I really wanted to use the new functions of papers 2

Hi all: I am sorry a number of you have issues with PDF downloading. It will be easier to diagnose the issue if each of you starts a separate private discussion, as we can't really follow the thread here and each of you may have different problems. Thanks!

I have the same issue - I can't seem to download pdf's from within Papers2.

Doing the time-consuming work-around of first saving it from safari then importing is ok, but sometimes I can't easily link the metada from within papers - e.g. when the only link within the browser in Papers is to the pdf. I'm finding it harder to match, so generally its much slower to get new articles into papers.

For those where you can load webpages within Papers2 but no PDF downloads.

Does it help if you shut down Papers2, enter the following in /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app, followed by a restart of Papers2?

        defaults write com.mekentosj.papers2 ignore_connection_warnings YES
