After update to 3.4.10 (or perhaps 3.4.9 as another user already posted in other forum), Papers app became very unresponsive in many aspects. Especially when viewing PDF, it'd take up to a few minutes to see its texts in high resolution.

Looking at the Console log, I see a lot of decoding logs though I'm not sure if they are relevant to the issue.

The CPU usage of Papers app is always close to 100%.

    Hi

Apologies for the inconvenience. Let's try to completely re-install Papers 3 and see if this fixes it.

Note that when you then open Papers 3 again, you will have to connect it to the location of your library the next time you start it up so please ensure your library is safely on Dropbox or you are using a Time Machine if your library is stored locally). You can check the exact location of your library by going to Papers > Preferences > Library

First, make sure that Papers 3 is closed and that Citations is not running. Citations can continue to run after Papers is closed, so if you still see the icon for it on the menu bar at the top of your screen you need to click on it and "disable citations".

Next you need to go to Finder and click on the Go menu, from here select the option for "Go to Folder..." and then copy and paste the text below in the prompt and hit Go:

    ~/Library/Application Support

Finder then should be displaying a normally hidden folder, and in here we're looking for a folder called "Papers3" which we need to move to the trash.

Next, open the Terminal app on your mac (this will be in the Utilities sub folder of the Applications folder) for me and then copy and paste this command exactly as is...

    defaults delete com.mekentosj.papers3

Press return, and check for any error messages.

Doing all of the above should completely reset Papers 3.

After you have deleted any existing Papers3 files on your computer, download the Papers 3 version from here: Papers 3 for Mac

When you next open Papers, do so whilst holding down the alt key. Then Browse to the location of the library you were using.

Also, if you are you using a Proxy, check that you don't have a firewall, anti-virus software that could be blocking Papers from accessing the internet and check whether the firewall allows Papers to have incoming connections in the Security & Privacy preferences.

    Best Wishes,
    Ayie

Reinstalling Papers didn't solve the problem. It was okay when it first launched, but started experiencing high CPU load (with roaring fan noise) again when reading multiple tabs of PDFs. I now have only one reading tab open, but the issue persists and its CPU load reaches up to 80-100%.

    Hey Tom -

Thanks so much for giving that a shot. I'm sorry to hear that that did not work! When you can, would you mind following the steps here to reset the SMC on your Mac?

If Papers is still drawing unnecessary power from the CPU, that should reset it.

    Keep us posted!

    Best,

    Cary

SMC reset / library repair / reinstallation they didn't help at all to solve this issue. I was told one of my colleagues who is also an avid Papers user that her Papers recently became unresponsive very frequently. I guess this is the same issue happening since recent updates. It clearly shows high CPU usage when multiple PDF tabs are open. Even zooming in/out in these PDFs takes quite long time if not forever to render clear texts in right resolution. Then I'd rather just open these files with Preview apps on Finder, giving up viewing them on Papers.

    Hey Tom -

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I'm so sorry to hear that this did not work.

While I still do not have a proper solution for you yet, I may have an alternative: are you familiar with our sister application ReadCube?

ReadCube, like Papers, is a reference manager but has been written using entirely different code and may be more successful for you. If you'd like to spend some time with the application, I more be more than happy to provide you with a free subscription to our Pro service (usually $55) and help you get set-up.

    Just let me know!

    Best,

    Cary

I found that this issue must have something to do with extensive disk use of Papers app. Looking at my Activity Monitor, Papers app has written more than 7 GB for just reading a couple papers today. I just click a tab to look at one of open PDF then it adds up 0.3 GB (= 300 MB) right away. It has read about 550 MB in the meantime. Hopefully this gives your developer a hint to debug the app. I have a strong feeling that unresponsive zoom in/out problem in Sierra also related with this issue. It is known Apple has fixed their PDFKit in the recent updates of Sierra and I doubt it still affects Papers app in this serious way.

I've already tried ReadCube several times in the past, but it didn't work very well for me. Especially importing Papers library lost all my organized folders and tags.

Forgot to mention that I suggest make this discussion public so we can invite other users to say about their experience on the recent versions. I think there must be other users, like my friend, struggling with the sample problem and their feedback could be also helpful to solve this issue.

I already told you ReadCube didn't work very well for me since it couldn't import my Papers library without losing organization.

Why don't you make this discussion public and invite other users to share their experience? I'm still not sure if this issue occurs only to me.

This post is now publicly viewable, but still not open to public discussion, showing "Discussions are closed to public comments". Seems like only you and I can leave comments now. Could you make it open for public comments so that other relevant users can jump in and keep discussion? Thanks.

    Hey Tom -

Thanks for getting back to me. Truthfully, I'm not sure. We are working on moving our discussion boards over to another service in the future which will give us more flexibly.

I'll keep looking into this to see if I can figure out why it's doing this.

    Best,

    Cary
